Saola Unicorn | Slide Mouse
A survey team found the new bovid species saola in 1992.
Saola unicorn. The saola pronounced sow la and also known as the asian unicorn or the vu quang bovid has two long straight parallel horns that can reach 20 inches in length. On 17th july 1992 the wwf officially announced the discovery of a new species. Horns are found on both males and females. Scientists have categorically documented saola in the wild on only four occasions to date.
There in the annamite range bordering vietnam and laos one of the world s rarest large mammals dwells quietly in the damp forest feeding on ferns shrubs and trees. The saola s fur is sleek and dark brown in color with dappled white markings on the face. None exist in captivity and this rarely seen mammal is already critically endangered. It seems somehow fitting that the saola an animal often referred to as the asian unicorn lives in a remote range of misty mountains in southeast asia.
The saola asian unicorn was not discovered until 1992. A local hunter gave the team a skull of an animal with long pointed horns.
